TWD: Dimply Plum Cake

Photobucket

Michelle of Bake-en selected Dimply Plum Cake for this week's Tuesdays with Dorie. I have seen this cake around before when Helen made it and also again at the Smitten Kitchen, plus many other blogs including a chocolate version from Palachinka. Needless to say, it has made me curious.

We all know what a not-so-closet baked fruit hater I am (thought TWD has made me branch out and I do like some things a bit more than I used to). Anyway, it will come as no surprise that I wasn't a huge fan of this recipe - it is definitely just my taste though and not the recipe (though the husband - who is a baked fruit fan - didn't like it either - he wished I had sliced the plums thinner than just halved). I thought the cake part was good - great texture and flavor - I used dark brown sugar in mine and topped it with some turbinado for that sweet crunch I love.

I did love how the plums baked up with their sweet jamminess (is that even a word?) - but the huge pieces of plum (and our plums must've been quite a bit bigger than the ones Dorie uses because I couldn't fit as many as the recipe called for) were just too much for us. I probably will try this again with some other fruit options - and perhaps even the plums again, but will most likely slice the fruit in the future.

Make sure to check out the TWD blogroll for all the other Dimply Cakes running around the food blogging world today courtesy of the amazing book Baking From My Home To Yours!

  1. Holly, your cake is picture-perfect! Sorry that neither of you really loved it, however. I think it might be really good with apples. My husband is, and always has been, a big fan of fruit desserts. And oatmeal cookies. And vanilla ice cream. Over the years, it's worn off on chocolate-loving me. Funny how our tastes can influence each other.

  3. Your plums look nice and red!! I bought yellow plums... So there wasn't a real colourcontrast in my cake.... :(

  4. Computer says no on jamminess, but it really should be a word :) Yeah, I was kind of expecting you not to like this, but I think it looks perfect and much better than the one I did, where I did not achieve such beautiful jamminess. :)

  5. Well they look great in the photo! I can help you with your leftover fruit creations in return for your help with the chocolatey ones! :)

  6. I agree - I wanted a little plum in every bite rather than a hunk of plum stuck in the middle of a sea of cake. Other than that, I wish I had seen the chocolate version - it sounds delicious.

  7. Sounds like we had similar feelings about this cake. I didn't hate it, but probably won't make it again. The other variations out there sound interesting, particularly the chocolate! Your pictures sure make this look great, though!

  8. I completely agree - even the idea of using plum halves seems like it obviously wouldn't work. If I never make this again I'd slice the fruit. And use peaches. Too bad your husband didn't like it, at least.

  11. Your cake looks wonderful. I did slice the plums a lot thinner than half, and I'm glad I did. The fruit to cake ratio worked out well that way.

  12. There's a chocolate version?! Hum...must try. Your plum, baked, is beautiful! I love that plum color. I'd like to order a dress in that color. Great looking cake!

  14. Bummer you weren't a fan! Try the cherry/lime version if you make it again. I wasn't sure I'd like it but I was pleasantly surprised! Beautiful pictures. Great job!

  15. I do not like fruit in cake or cookies either.

I love this cake though. I could just eat the cake.

  16. LOL LOL Then it might come as a surprise that the baked-fruit-lover that I am, agrees with you that this recipe was not my favorite either!
But easy and simple to make, it does get children to eat plums, providing its dryness is overcome with lots of maple sirup or ice cream! LOL ...Doesn't that defeat the purpose of eating plums? LOL LOL

  18. I think yours looks great. I will also try this recipe with something other than plums next time. Maybe peaches or pears. Hmmmm. Your pictures are very pretty.

  19. I agree that one of the best parts of TWD is branching out and trying new things I wouldn't normally bake. I hope you guys like next week better! :)

  23. Your cake looks lovely, even if it wasn't quite to your taste. I actually think the cake would be quite good without any fruit at all.

  30. Cake looks delicious! It might change my mind about plums after all. ;) I used cherries instead. I am hoping they will soften up for tomorrow's breakfast. Good job! :)

  31. I love the idea of topping the cake with turbinado. I'll try that next time. Too bad you didn't like the cake, hopefully the next TWD recipe will appeal to you more :)

  32. Glad to read your post - I was considering making the plum version and now if I do I will slice the plums thinner than just halving them. Great to know!!

  33. This looks beautiful and those bitty cupcakes are calling my name. Such a good use for that big can of Ovaltine in my pantry. Sorry about the cake not being a hit!

  34. Lovely looking cake! I'm with you on wanting smaller pieces of fruit. I'll try again with apple.

  37. Gorgeous, just gorgeous. That first photo is amazing...I thought I was looking at art! You are both artist and baker this month...yeah for you. Looks very tasty!

  38. Beautiful cake!!! Love the sugar on top!

  39. I would absolutely second the idea to slice the fruit up. Mine did not get "jammy" and I was not a huge fan of the cake with a huge chunk of plum on top! Now we know.

  40. yea, this one was definitely all about the baked fruit! sorry you didn't really like it, but it looks great!
