TWD: Applesauce Spice Bars

Tuesdays with Dorie is brought to us this week by Karen at Something Sweet by Karen. I made these bars last week to serve along with the Brownie Buttons at our open house. I wasn't there for the open house, but there were hardly any goodies left when we got home, so I'd say they were a hit.

The changes I made to the original recipe were fairly minimal - I browned the butter and used pecans. I also used a Fuji apple because it was what I had on hand, and left out the raisins because I didn't have any on hand. My toddler really loved these, but wasn't as big of a fan of the nuts in them. I would most likely made these again, but may try making them without the nuts and just add some more apple or something instead - or maybe cinnamon or toffee chips for something a little different!

All in all, we really enjoyed these (the glaze was of course the best part for me :)

Make sure to check the TWD blogroll for lots more apple-y goodness!

Not much of an update on the preggers front here at this point. Still sick, still tired. Still job searching and still being stressed out (but trying not to be). Anyway, I don't really want to dwell on it too much today, but I did want to say that I'm so grateful to you all for being here and for your support! I really hope to get a bit more back into the swing of things soon! I have several things that I've made when I've felt up to it that I want to share with you, so hopefully the energy to get the posts done and think of something even remotely inspired to say will start sparking in my brain soon.

Love you all! Thanks so much!!

I agree, the glase was great, hope all "problems" end in smoke soon.

Sometimes not dwelling on it is the best thing for you. Hope you start to feel better soon!

And those bars look great--it's no wonder they were gone by the time you got back :)

This look good but to me, it's more of a fall recipe. So I will save it for later on : )

Your bars look great! Mine are in the oven right now, I can't wait to try them... I was really sick during my first pregnancy, it is no fun. At least it is all worth it in the end! Have your tried ginger for your nausea? It was the only thing that worked for me: ginger tea, Reeds ginger brew, you name it... There are even lollipops (though I never tried them) that are made from ginger, and are specifically for pregnant women - Preggie Pops. Good luck, I hope it gets easier very soon.

Those would make someone buy the house esp. if it came with the baker!

These look wonderful. I would totally come to an open house if I knew there would be yummy treats. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm amazed with all you manage to pull off with your busy life, kids, etc. Your bars look fantastic!

My mom used to say "It's not hell so it can't last forever." Hang in there.

A bit depressing to see fall stuff coming out so early... but still very comforting to remember those hearthy, rich and heavy flavors!

Beautiful photos, per usual, and I love that plate! Sorry to hear you're not feeling better, I'm impressed with how positive you're managing to stay.

They look so lovely, and on that leaf plate especially lovely. Very nice, and you know, I think I am going to leave out the nuts the next time, too. But, never, no never, the raisins! LOL. Great job!

Ooh, your leaf plate reminds me that I have a couple of those, too. Fall is comin'! Hang in there. When it rains it pours, but then we complain when there's a drought. ;)
And your bars look great!

I'm so glad you and the twins are doing better than earlier - I think of you daily and hope things continue smoothly (or as smoothly as they can!). I love your idea of putting cinnamon chips in the bars!

Mmmmm, toffee chips. That sounds amazing! I skipped the glaze. I'm starting to think it was a mistake.

Great photos Holly! I loved these bars too and, like you, the glaze was my favorite part! I gave most of my bars away so I wouldn't be tempted to eat all of them myself.

The bars + glaze were so good, but I only glazed one of ours. Boy, did I regret that decision! Glad they were a hit at your open house. Hope things turn the corner for you soon (um, the corner towards better days, I mean!)
