SMS: Bear's Peach Cobbler

Sweet Melissa Sundays this week is brought to us by Andrea of Nummy Kitchen who in fact chose Bear's Peach Cobbler.  Melissa tells a little story of this dessert in the book about this being her little sister's favorite dessert and how she requested it for her birthday the same year she got her teddy bear I believe.

It just so happens that baked peaches are the only baked fruit I generally like.  Since fresh peach season won't hit here in Utah until the end of the summer, I used some nice bottled peaches I had from Costco.  I am fairly certain I would like this recipe much more with fresh peaches, but the ones at the store here were pretty pathetic when I went looking.  The bonus for using bottled peaches is that it really cuts down on the cooking time.  The downside was that the flavor really wasn't all that great for some reason.

I really don't think it had anything to do with the recipe though.  My very favorite peach cobbler recipe is almost identical in the filling and is always heavenly.  I did really like the biscuits here for a change though from the more soft drop biscuit dough I usually use.  The only other change I made was to substitute some of the white sugar with dark brown, mainly just because I love it - it made the filling a beautiful dark amber color too.

I think I would like just the biscuits with some strawberry jam or something though until I can get some good peaches.  I've been spoiled buying them and bottling my own for the past few years and it really stinks that I ran out!  I am not going to miss it this year, that is for sure!

Make sure to check out how the other SMS Bakers did this week!

Well, it still looks like heaven to me! I am so craving something sweet right now I'm about ready to eat my fingers off, lol...I hear ya though... the smell of peaches in the store this week was intoxicating- but they were as hard as rocks, bruised and scarred to all get out!

Yeah, I think it looks totally sinful regardless. I wonder what it was about the filling's taste that was off? I wonder if it was the brand of bottled peaches?

Bummer you didn't like it all that much, but it looks great!

Sorry you weren't too crazy about it. It was my first try of peach cobbler and I really enjoyed it. The pictures are great, Holly.

I'm sorry that the bottled peaches didn't work out that well. I really like your decision to add brown sugar with the white -- it seems like that would really enhance the flavor and I'll have to remember to do that next time.

Bummer that the bottled peaches didn't work out in this recipe! Your cobbler looks gorgeous - great photos. I haven't made mine yet but I like your idea to add brown sugar along with the white. Maybe I'll try that!

I used brown sugar too - I think it adds more flavor than just "sweet". The biscuits look so nice and fluffy too!

It's too bad the peaches were something of a disappointment. The filling looks beautiful, though! Nice work!

Great cobbler! Are you getting as much rain in Utah as we are here in Idaho? It keeps raining non stop!

Looks great, sorry it is not peach season. I don't know if it is here since we always seem to have out of season fruit. Was sure a pain to peel them.

Hi Holly!

Your cobbler came out beautiful, even with the bottled peaches. I would definitely try it again later in the summer when peaches come into season in your area- my family really loved it with the fresh fruit and I would highly recommend the recipe.

I wanted to introduce myself- my name is Joy and I'm a brand new blogger and SMS baker. I'd love for you to check out my site, and I look forward to getting to know you better during future weekly posts! :)

By the way, I saw that you are a Baking GAL- me too! I lead a special bonus team each round called "Oven Loving for the Recovering," which bakes for hospitalized soldiers recovering from injury stateside. I'd love to have you on the team during upcoming rounds, so let me know if you're interested or would like more info!

I like the sound of using brown sugar in the filling! I love brown sugar, especially dark brown. Whenever I see a recipe that calls for light brown sugar, I wonder why in the world they would want to cut down on the flavor!
