Banana Cream Pie. Oh how I love Banana Cream Pie. I have to say that Dorie's variation on it is a really nice riff. Creamy, dreamy pastry cream, lightly spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. This week's recipe was chosen by Amy at Sing for Your Supper. It is one I've been wanting to try for a while now, so I'm so glad she chose it.
For the crust, we used Dorie's recipe and as always it was tender and delicious. While I can't say with conviction that this is my favorite version of a banana cream pie, it was a really nice change. If you love a little spice with your bananas, then definitely head over to Amy's blog for the recipe, or better yet, get your copy of Baking From My Home To Yours!
My pie this week is also my entry to You Want Pies With That? The theme this time around, chosen by Jacque and Natashya was Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous. While I don't think you could say that my celebrity of choice is rich, he is definitely famous. Funny enough it was the first celebrity I thought of, probably because I was listening to the soundtrack with Aidan when I was reading about the theme.
So, my celebrity of choice, also chosen by Aidan, is Curious George. We cut the extra dough into little elliptical shapes and used the back of a knife to press a leaf pattern into the dough. I also brushed the edges with a little egg wash (1 lg egg + 1 Tablespoon water, beaten) to help it brown nicely. For the crust, we used Dorie's recipe and as always it was tender and delicious. While I can't say with conviction that this is my favorite version of a banana cream pie, it was a really nice change. We have loved Curious George, well, counting me, since I was a kid. I think he would love this creamy pie with its layers and layers of bananas and the fun leaves around the edges.

Yummily gorgeous! And the mention of Curious George made me laugh, out loud! I love him!
Your pie looks so tasty!
Yours looks great! and the mention of spice.. mmm..
Amazing pie! Unfortunately this was the first of Dorie's recipes that I didn't really care for....
Yours looks good, I love the leaf detail! I enjoyed the spice in the pastry cream as well. I think it masks the egg flavor a bit which is a good thing in my opinion!
It looks fabulous!!!
I'm so jealous of your crust - it's so gorgeous! Mine gave me a lot of trouble.
Curious George would have loved your pie! It is gorgeous!
Great looking pie!

How funny! I have a bunch of overly ripe bananas on my counter today and just decided to hop on to my computer to look for something different to do with the bananas! We're all in the same food moods, I guess...cycle of the moon maybe? Your pie looks delicious!!!!!!!
Love that the pie is for Curious George--and your pie looks great!
IMHO, Curious George is definitely a celebrity. And I'm sure he would love to have a sliceof your pie.
I love how your son participates in your baking endeavors... Curious George is a mighty fine choice! :)
Looks fabulous! And I think George is suitably famous. Oh, thanks for picking a Passover friendly dessert for next week. I'm very excited!
This look delicious! This pie was a hit at my house :)
Curious George! I love it! The pie wasn't my favorite version, either. I think I'd like it with less spice.
Whhooo!!! That looks beautiful. I like the crust design. And I like your new header....
Nice job on the pie! I am sure it was super tasty!
Your pie looks SO good! Love the crust.
Having a giveaway on my blog--ends Friday!
I love curious george! And bananas. And the detail in those leaves. Excellent work!
I love that you made a pie for Curious George, the cutest and most troublesome monkey. It looks so tasty!
Holly your pie looks perfect. Thanks for sharing.
Aw, so cute! I love curious George. :)
I love Curious George, especially how his main trait has bean changed from a way to get into trouble to a way to learn about math/science concepts. (And it's got great theme music and William H. Macy narrates.) Aidan has great taste!
Curious George! Probably wayyyy more famous than the rest of our pseudo-celebrities. What a cool idea.
Oh, that is a veritable classic! Too bad I missed the deadline :( Next time I hope!
Your crust is A-Maz-ing! Oy, I have a lot of practicing to do. Great job!
gorgeous looking pie, esp the crust!
